What is: OzIris – Parc Astérix

August 25, 2019

OzIris is a steel roller coaster located at
Parc Astérix, in France. Like many of the attractions at park, the
ride is themed around the adventures of the popular comic book character Astérix. In particular, the rides storyline directly
derives from the animated film “The Twelve Tasks of Astérix”, in which the lead character
encounters Iris, an infamous Egyptian Sorcerer. OzIris, as an attraction, opened to the public
on the 7th of April, 2012. The ride, which was manufactured by Swiss
company Bolliger and Mabillard, is the well known inverted roller coaster model. To immerse guests within the rides storyline,
a new area, named the Land of Egypt, was constructed at the park alongside OzIris. Together, the large investment greatly expanded
Parc Asterix, attracting a multitude of new visitors. The new ride as a whole was built at the cost
of 20 million euros; 8 million of which was spent creating the new themed area. As guests walk up to the ride, they are greeted
by a multitude of Egyptian style theming. An obelisk lies in the centre of the area,
in front of the large temple of Iris. Sand lies beneath the rides track, further
adding to the immersive nature of the experience. Guests enter queue line through an archway,
located beneath the coasters singular vertical loop. Statues of the Egyptian gods are embedded
within the walls of the archway, guiding riders to the sandy oasis beneath the coaster’s
layout. After navigating part of the queue line, guests
enter the temple building and traverse through 4 themed rooms. The first of which is the impossible stair
illusion, while the second depicts the various spells Iris, the sorcerer, has created. The 3rd room takes guests through Iris’
laboratory, full of various potions and equipment. While the final room is the ride’s station. By this point, guests are said to have become
hypnotised by Iris, causing them to follow his every command. Once visitors board the trains, which seat
a total of 32 riders, in 8 rows of 4; they are cast with a spell. Iris turns the riders into birds, allowing
them to experience the sensation at flight. At this point, the trains of the ride are
dispatched, and guests begin to climb the lift hill. Riders reach the maximum height of 35m (115ft),
before plummeting down a leftward banked drop. Interestingly, OzIris became the first B&M
inverted coaster to not feature the classic pre-drop, instead opting for an instant steep
descent. After guests navigate the initial drop, they
enter the ride’s first inversion, a dive loop. This is followed by a steep right hand overbanked
turn, which leads riders into the 2nd inversion, a vertical loop. The trains quickly pass through a small tunnel,
before navigating an Immelmann. This is gracefully followed by a right hand
turn, and a quick drop into a tunnel that lies within the water, directly in front of
the Egyptian temple. Riders exit the tunnel directly into a Zero-G
Roll, followed by an upwards helix. The ride experience ends with a second Zero-G
roll, as well as a series of gradual turns, leading guests into the final brake run. Throughout the graceful flight, riders navigate
1000m (3280ft) of track, reaching speeds of up to 90kmh (56mph). The full experience lasts for a total of 54
seconds, measured from the first drop, to the ride’s final brake run. OzIris, as a pure ride, is often stated to
be one of the less intense Bolliger and Mabillard inverted coasters. However, the rides unique layout, and fantastic
theme, provide guests with a overall experience that surpasses most of its counterparts. On top of this, the ride’s high throughput
of 1600 riders per hour, drastically increased overall capacity of Parc Asterix. Would you like to see a similar, unique, large
scale addition at your local park? What’s your opinion? I’d like to give a huge thanks to

In terms of coaster, it’s my least favourite B&M, but in terms of experience, the theming is amazing, don’t get me wrong! I don’t hate this coaster, I just was a little disappointed- im a big fan of B&M coasters, don’t get me wrong!

It seems like OzIris kind of inspired Banshee at Kings Island. The drop without the pre-drop, the dive loop as the first inversion (OzIris had the first dive loop on a B&M inverted coaster fun fact), and the transitions are a bit more drawn out than many of the older ones, as it seems to have the same grace as Banshee.

Do you have any advice for theme park enthusiasts, like me, who have are too scared to ride extreme rollercoasters ? (The type that you present in most of your videos).
I've always been very scared and worried for anything that's remotely dangerous/thrilling, yet I love theme parks! And sometimes it bugs me to not be able to experience as many rides as my friends.
Over the last few years, I've pushed myself to try more things, not just simulators and slow rides. For example, doing Animal Kingdom's Everest was a challenge for me, and it was fun. I absolutely love The Mummy ride in Orlando, even though it's one of the fastest rides I've tried (I can't see a thing, maybe it helps with fear, lol), and I can't get enough of Crush Coaster in Paris. I don't know what you would consider those rides but that's the level I'm comfortable with at the moment (sometimes, I still worry when I get on them). I've also tried the Doom tower in Orlando, and although I'm proud to have done it, I don't think I would do it again. The feeling was too intense. But the Tower of Terror is fine with me.
What should I try next, that's a good compromise? What should be my first looping coaster? I would like to try one someday, but I'm terrified of being upside down.
Also, it doesn't help that I have to constantly worry about the loudness of the ride cuz my ears are fucked up and will start hurting if it's too loud (no Rock and Roller Coaster for me).
So that's my whole life story, haha. If you have any advice, feel free to tell me all about it !
    (Also, I love your videos.)

I was actually going to go to this theme park when I stayed in France last year but it turned out to be too expensive (coaster enthusiast problems) so I went to Parc Saint Paul instead.

I have done quite a lot of coaster and this coaster is still my favourite I love the underneath the track feeling this first drop back row is amazing and I love the theming and the underground parts or even after the first drop it feels like your legs are gonna hit the ground !! This is the only coaster which I have ridden on which I do find any part of the ride which are useless… this is a non stop 54 seconds and it’s not really intense for sure but it is so smooth !! The top drops into the water and before the second 0 g roll are awesome as much as the first one particularly the second one providing a good thrill of dropping down to the floor once again and those zero g rolls are fast but they feel so slow like if time was slow down and I couldnt get enough of this feeling of flying !! Well I think you guessed it I love this ride so bad !! Sadely, except this one and the tonnerre de zeus, the Astérix park don’t offers as good rides as this one or even park as Port Aventura or Europa park but it’s still an awesome park in its kind and it’s developing really good those last years hope that’ll continue and that we will see even better rides coming there to beat this one !!
